In this edition, we report results from our survey of US retina specialists during the fourth quarter of 2009. We report on retinal procedure volume and we provide data on anti-VEGF therapy, combo therapies, laser photocoagulation procedures, vitrectomies, and retinal surgery locations.
Posted by daveharmon on Friday 19 February, 2010 03:34 PM
The landscape of retinal therapies has changed dramatically during the past three years as anti-VEGF IVT injections have become the treatment of choice for wet AMD. As retina specialists await word from the CATT (Comparison of Age-related Macular Degeneration Treatments Trial) study comparing Lucentis and Avastin and due in early 2011, the use of both anti-VEGFs has expanded beyond wet AMD to include other exudative conditions, most notably diabetic macular edema. In addition, improvements in surgical technique for vitrectomy—in particular, smaller incisions—and the growing use of ASCs for surgery have changed and continue to change the economics of retinal surgery.

This edition of our survey report is based on our analysis of 605 surveys received from US refractive and cataract surgeons. Thirty-six percent of responding surgeons referred to themselves as combination refractive/cataract surgeons, while 46 percent called themselves cataract surgeons. Only 18 percent reported limiting their practices to refractive surgery—dwindling refractive surgery procedure numbers during this severe recession is the likely cause of this low percentage.

The 2009 AAO meeting in San Francisco featured papers, symposia, and exhibits on a number of topics in refractive surgery. Among those covered were femtosecond lasers, corneal inlays, and collagen cross linking.

The 2009 AAO meeting's agenda included a wealth of sessions for cataract surgeons. Topics in the spotlight included strategies for achieving success with presbyopia-correcting IOLs (PC-IOLs), treating astigmatic cataract patients, and one of the hottest topics, new femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLASC).

The combined Jules Stein/ASCRS winter meeting was held February 6 through 9 in Los Angeles and was attended by about 250 mostly local cataract and refractive surgeons and 30 exhibitors. Much time in both the general sessions and educational workshops was focused on three main topics of high interest to surgeons: premium IOLs, challenging cataract surgery techniques and refractive surgery updates. Methycillin-resistant post-LASIK infections and IFIS were also on the agenda.
