First Commercial Procedure Performed with Encelto, Only FDA-Approved Treatment for MacTel — Encelto (revakinagene taroretcel-lwey) is an encapsulated cell-based gene therapy indicated for one-time implantation in the vitreous, anchored to the sclera.

Neurotech Pharmaceuticals, of Cumberland, Rhode Island, announced Aug. 11 the first commercial surgical procedure for Encelto, the only US FDA-approved treatment for macular telangiectasia (MacTel) type 2.

MacTel is a slowly progressing disease that causes loss of central vision as capillaries around the fovea widen and leak. The leaking blood pools in the macula, impairing vision and damaging photoreceptors. Development of scar tissue on the macula can further impede central vision.

Charles C. Wykoff, MD, PhD, of Retina Consultants of Texas in Houston, performed the procedure. He said in a news release: “For the first time, we can offer a valuable and durable treatment option for patients, one that slows their loss of photoreceptors and maintains more visual function over time.”

The implant is a tiny hollow cylindrical membrane that encapsulates human epithelial cells genetically engineered to continuously produce ciliary neurotropic factor (CNTF). CNTF is a potent neuroprotective protein that promotes the survival and maintenance of photoreceptors.
