Alcon Generates $2.6 Billion in Q2-2025 Net Sales

Alcon reported Aug. 19 that its Q2-2025 net sales totaled $2.6 billion, a 4 percent increase (+3 percent cc) over $2.5 billion in Q2-2024.

Surgical net sales for implantables, consumables, and equipment/other were $1.5 billion, a 2 percent increase (+1 percent cc) over $1.4 billion in Q2-2024.

Net sales for implantables were $456 million, a decrease of 2 percent (-2 percent cc) from $464 million in Q2-2024, reflecting soft market conditions and competitive pressures.

Consumables net sales were $777 million, an increase of 6 percent (+4 percent cc) over $736 million. Growth was led by vitreoretinal and cataract consumables, particularly in international markets, and price increases.

Equipment/other net sales were $222 million, in line with the Q2-2024 total (-1 percent cc). Declines in legacy equipment were partially offset by sales of the recently launched Unity VCS and Voyager DSLT devices.

Vision care net sales for contact lenses and ocular health were $1.12 billion, a 6 percent increase (+5 percent cc) over $1.06 billion in Q2-2024.

Alcon, a Swiss company with US headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, lowered its full year guidance to $10.3 billion to $10.4 billion from $10.4 billion to $10.5 billion in May.

Carl Zeiss Meditec Posts Quarterly Revenue of $519.4 Million

Carl Zeiss Meditec reported Aug. 7 that its ophthalmic device revenue for the three months ended June 2025 (the third quarter of its fiscal 2025) was €442.9 million ($519.4 million, converted June 30, 2025), a 0.1 percent increase (+1.6 percent cc) over €442.4 million in the same period in 2024.

The German company, with US headquarters in Dublin, California, said total revenue for the quarter was €549.6 million, a 1.9 percent increase (+3.5 percent cc) over €539.4 million a year ago.

Zeiss said it was able to achieve volume increases in intraocular lenses and growth in surgical microscopes, despite headwinds from negative currency effects and the introduction of US trade tariffs in the quarter.

The company said it continues to expect moderate revenue through the end of its fiscal year, with the effects of US tariffs passed on to the market through a targeted pricing policy.

Euan Thomson, PhD, to Leave: On Aug. 14, Euan S. Thomson announced that he would leave Zeiss on Sept. 30.

Thomson succeeded Jim Mazzo as president of the Ophthalmic Devices strategic business unit and CEO of Carl Zeiss Meditec in 2020 while retaining his role as head of Zeiss’ Digital Business unit.

He didn’t define his next role, saying only that his passions continued to operate at the intersection of health care and technology, and the world now has the capabilities to shape the future of health care like never before.

Thomson said he handed over his ophthalmology responsibilities toward the end of 2024.

Opus Generates $2.9 Million in Q2-2025 Revenue from Partnership with Viatris

Opus Genetics reported Aug. 13 that its license with commercial partner Viatris had generated $2.9 million in revenue in Q2-2025, compared with $1.1 million in Q2-2024.

Opus, of Durham, North Carolina, said the revenue primarily resulted from reimbursement for R&D services.

Under the partnership, Viatris is developing Opus’ phentolamine ophthalmic solution (0.75%) for presbyopia and chronic night driving impairment in keratorefractive patients with reduced mesopic vision.

Viatris launched the same formulation of phentolamine for reversal of pharmacologically induced mydriasis under the brand name Ryzumvi in April 2024 as part of the collaboration.

Outlook Reports First Sales of Lytenava in Europe of $1.5 Million

Outlook Therapeutics reported Aug. 14 that Lytenava generated its first commercial sales—in Germany and the UK—with total revenue of $1.5 million in the quarter ended June 30, 2025 (the third quarter of its fiscal 2025), transforming Outlook into a commercial company.

The Iselin, New Jersey, company said Lytenava, an ophthalmic formulation of bevacizumab, had launched in June 2025 in Germany and the UK.

Outlook said it was gearing up for additional launches with its commercial partner, Cencora (formerly AmerisourceBergen), across Europe later this year and through 2026.

The company resubmitted its biologics license application to the US FDA in March 2025; a decision date is set for Aug. 27, 2025.
